Nigerian born Irish politician Adebari wins re-election
Oludare Sunday Fase | African Examiner | posted: Mon. Jun 08, 2009
Former mayor of Portlaoise Nigerian born Rotimi Adebari has retained his seat at
Portlaoise town council in an election that was keenly contested.
Speaking after the election, Adebari said “I am highly delighted and appreciative of the
fact that people still have confidence in me. I look forward to playing my part in the town
in the next five years, and to be there for them in as much as I can.”
Mr Adebari was first elected into the town council as councilor in 2004, and in 2007 July
he was elected as the mayor of Portlaiose town.
“It is a term of one year, and I went back to the council as councilor. We rotate the
mayoral ship every twelve month, mayor are elected by the members of the council in
June every year. My term expired June 2008 and I am back as a councilor up till June
2009 when we will be facing the public for re-election.’’ he once explained in an exclusive
interview with African Examiner.
In another cheering news for immigrants in Ireland, Dutch former aid worker Jan Rotte,
retained his seat for the Labour Party in Lismore, Co Waterford, while Kristina
Jankaitiene, a Lithuanian school teacher who took a seat for the Green Party in
Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan.
However, the bad news is that three Nigerians Adeola Ogunsina, Idowu Olafimihan,
Ignatius Okafor who stood for election in the same electoral seat lost in Mulhuddart,
north Dublin.
Adebari expressed dissatisfaction over the loss saying ‘‘it was pleasing that many
immigrants wanted to get involved in their communities but how do you explain the
situation where, in one electoral area, three immigrant candidates are standing, without
taking into consideration that they are actually tapping into the same votes.”
Also, the only immigrant candidate elected in the 2004 local elections, Nigerian born
medical doctor Taiwo Matthew, lost his seat on Ennis Town Council due to another
immigrant who split the vote.
He painfully remarked "You win some, you lose some. That's how it goes. The most
important thing is that I gave a good account of myself."
