Bayo Ohu killed? I'm devastated!
Watch out ! That cell phone may be a gun
By Ayo Fawibe
It was a cool Sunday evening on the 20th of September, 2009 in Bowie, Maryland. The music was
blarring and the atmosphere was charged with a lot to eat and drink as expected at a child
dedication party. My cell phone rang and the joy nof the evening was shattered, Deji was at the
other end from Pittsburg, Pennsylvenia, " I have bad news for you, Ohu is dead" he said.
Deji, a Phd student in Pittsburg was the habinger of the sad news and I could feel devastation in
his tone as he released the unfortunate information. We are surely mourning, yes we are,
because one of our own is gone. Egba 90 (1990 Mass Communication Alumni of Ogun State
Polytechnic, now Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta) will miss Bayo Ohu.
It's sad to realise that the struggles spanning decades of hard work will end like this without
warning. It really hurts to remember that some of us, including Bayo had to wade through
"barriers" to see the four walls of higher institution. In our days at The Polytechnic, Ibadan
through to Ogun Poly, Bayo did everything through thick and thin to make it. He was a disciplined,
quiet, and brilliant guy who never forgot his background.
The cicumstances surrounding Bayo's death is still being "investigated" by the Police, but it is
undisputable that Ohu, as we enjoy calling him, was a pricinpled guy who would never
compromise ethics of journalism for bread and butter. He was in Katsina as Guardian
Correspondent and he performed exceedingly well to earn promotion as Assistant News Editor,
which necessitated his transfer to Lagos.
This was his message on facebook "Ohu Bayo Ayanlola August 4 at 12:58pm Report
Ayo IFALOWIBE. Long time indeed. Where are you and how are you doing. I am still in
The Guardian praying for a better think. How is your family and the business. Ayo, I
appreciate your message. Hope we will always keep in touch. BAYO OHU".
As we weep and say, Ohu God bless your soul, those who cut short his life would probably come
forth to do the same. The wicked cannot live forever and they can only kill the body, not the soul.
Members of the Egba 90 club will never forget the gangling gentleman from Ado- Awaye. Bayo
Ayanlola Ohu, please Rest-In-Peace, good brother and friend.
Watch out ! That cell phone may be a gun
Technology is no doubt the greatest achievement of man since creation, but as man yearns for
new discoveries, so he inches closer to self destruction. This is not a quote from any known
philosopher, but a candid assessment of man's journey through life so far.
We know that cell phones are being used to detonate bombs, but when they have now been
transformed into direct instruments of death, then it calls for serious concerns. There is no
gain-saying that cell phone is closer to a lot human beings than their children and this
categorizes that small piece as coveted piece of possession.
The importation of cell phone technology has contributed immensenly to African development in
no small measure, but conversely, that small piece is today one of the most efficient apparatus
being employed in the commission of crime on the Continent.
It was recently reported that cell phone gun has found its way into Nigeria, if this is true, then the
federal government should be aware that the struggle to contain this "hydra" is definitely going to
surpass the nightmare being experienced over the Niger-Delta oil war.
This evolvement of cell phone gun in our society will definitely pose a wholesome challenge to the
Nigerian security agents who have always been known to be complacent and greedy. The wave
of crime in Nigeria is already alarming, therefore, the introduction of the cell phone gun into the
system is unthinkable, but it is a reality.
The advent of the cell phone gun is a challenge, not to the security agents alone, but all
Nigerians. The National Assembly should as a matter of urgency work towards outlawing this
unfortunate instrument of death before it spreads in the society. Thet time is now.
